4. ECUADOR MARLBORO RACING TEAM 1973-1974
Porsche 908/02#018 was built as one of four original short tail Flunder spyders in 1969. It was entered by the factory in the 1969 Nurburgring 1000 Km race and was driven by Hans Herrmann and Rolf Stommelen to second place. It was sold, by the factory, to Freiherr Karl Von Wendt on October 3, 1969. Von Wendt entered the car in several races in 1970, often teamed with Willi Kauhsen. At the end of the season Von Wendt retired from racing and sold the car to Guillermo Ortega of the Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team.
The " 12 Hour Marlboro Race" conducted in September 1972, at Yaguarcocha, Ecuador, was organized by Marlboro and the Ecuador Auto Club. The Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team entry of Porsche 908/02-018 was severely damaged in a crash while being driven by Ortega. See the newspaper photo and translation of the caption into English, Ownership Documentation, pages 36 and 37. Lothar Ranft was the chief mechanic and sometime driver of the car and had previously worked as a factory race mechanic. A verbal estimate for the necessary repairs was given by the factory (about 30,000 to 35,000 Deutsche marks according to Lothar's recollection) and the damaged car was shipped to the factory. After seeing the damage the factory estimated cost of repairs was so expensive, (somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 Deutsche marks, again according to Lothar's recollection) that the Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team opted to purchase another 908 for approximately the same cost as the anticipated repairs and use 908/02#018 for spare parts.
In 1973 Guillermo Ortega and the Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team purchased 908#022 from Hans Dieter Weigel. See Ownership Documentation, pages 30 and 31. The car was stored in Lothar Ranft's racing shop in Germany and never exported.
The Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team was planning to enter the preliminary four hour race at Le as well as the twenty-four hour race. However, time was of the essence and it would have been impossible to present and register the newly purchased 908#022 with the national sponsoring body, the Automobile Club of Ecuador, in time for the races. The necessary documentation would not have been received in time. Ranft made the decision to replace chassis number 908#022 with the chassis plate from the car which had been written off, 908/02#018, and which had the proper racing documentation. It was simply a matter of expediency. The team was trying to win races and chassis numbers were only to verify documentation. In 1973, both 908#022 and 908/02#018 were in short tail Flunder configuration so a chassis plate switch was easy.
The substitution of chassis plate 908/02#018 on original chassis 908#022 is also known by Hans Dieter Weigel. See Ownership Documentation, page 31.
In order to travel and race using "the official Racing document from the destroyed Porsche 908/02#018 issued by the Automobile Club from Ecuador "ANETA" ... [Lothar Ranft] replaced the chassis plate on chassis 908#022 with the aluminum chassis plate from the destroyed Porsche 908/02#018 because the Racing and the Travel Document "Carnet de Pasage" showed the No. 908/02#018! " See Affidavit in Ownership Documentation page 34.
In June 1973 Porsche 908#022 now bearing chassis number 908/02#018 was again entered in the Le 24 Hours Race, this time by the Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team and driven by Ortega and Fausto Merello. It carried number 4 and placed seventh overall.
After LeMans the car was raced in the Interseries by Lothar Ranft.
In June 1974, 908#022 was back at LeMans racing the twenty-four hours for an incredible fifth time. Porsche race number 17 was driver by Merello, Ortega and Ranft this time. Entered by the Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team, it retired in the tenth hour after being in 16th place during the preceding hour. The Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team was the fastest of the 8 cylinder cars.

5. SUBSEQUENT OWNERS 1974-PRESENT
In 1974, Porsche 908#022 was sold by the Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team to Kurt Lotterschmid who is a three time European Group C champion. Kurt sold the car shortly thereafter to August Deutsch. A new body by Felix Gmachmeier was put on the car and it was entered in several races.
The car with Gmachmeier bodywork intact was then bought in 1977 by Ray Brezinka of R&H Racing in Canada. See Ownership Documentation, page 38. He raced it in at least one Can Am race at Mid Ohio on June 11, 1978.
Bill Bradley Racing bought the car from Brezinka in 1980 and put it through a two year restoration to return the car to original factory 908/02 specifications. The original Flunder body was reunited with the chassis at this time. See Ownership Documentation, page 39, where Ray Brezinka requested August Deutsch to release the original body and wheels to the car's new purchaser, Bill Bradley. The work was done by Paddy O'Grady, an ex-factory mechanic, with assistance from the factory. The first outing after the restoration was at the Old-timer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in 1982. Bill Bradley drove the car to victory.
Attwood Racing bought the car in August 1982. Richard Attwood and Mike Ostrournoff campaigned the car extensively in the Super Sports Series and other races from 1982 to 1987. They have provided documentation of at least 19 races with only 2 DNF's,
The car was bought by Frank Gallogoly in 1987 who had it for a few months before selling it to Kerry Morse. Morse entered and raced the car at the Monterey Historic Races in August, 1987. He sold it shortly thereafter to Dick Barbour who immediately resold it to Burkhard Von Schenck.
Bob Jordan purchased the car on January 15, 1989. The car was stripped to a bare frame and all components were refurbished or replaced with new old stock parts. It is interesting to note that physical evidence of modifications made to the car to carry cameras in 1970 remained visible 19 years later. The reassembly and completion were done in an extremely careful and sensitive manner to ensure a visually and mechanically accurate restoration. After consultation with several recognized Porsche authorities, the chassis plate worn by the car was returned to its original 908#022. The Carnet requirements which dictated the original chassis plate change obviously no longer applied.
This unique racing Porsche has participated in several historic races and shows. It never fails to draw a crowd or produce spectators who saw it raced by McQueen or Solar Productions.
Following its restoration the car has been maintained as close to new as possible with mechanical and cosmetic upkeep being performed as necessary.
In 2000 the car was purchased by JoeMr. Mundy. He and his son David have driven the car actively at race tracks across the United States since. He describes the car as “wonderful to drive.” It is a consistent crowd pleaser.
