"Sergio Santander was killed in an accident when dicing for the first places of a race for the Chilean Formula 3 Championship in the Las Vizcachas circuit at Puente Alto near Santiago de Chile. Santander tried to overtake an opponent in the main start/finish line, but the two cars touched wheels as they passed the boxes and veered off track. Both vehicles violently collided at some 190 km/h against the inner safety wall at the exit of the pitlane. Whilst the other driver was seriously injured, and Santander passed away shortly after. Sergio's mother and brother were at the circuit attending the race and witnessed the accident.
Sergio Santander's name was borrowed a few years later when a racing circuit located in Las Machas, near Arica, was named after him. Sergio's father. Sergio Santander Fantini, was a successful race car driver and would be later elected head of the Chilean Olympic Committee."
